I'm Scared!

I've always been afraid of things. Monsters and scary things are just not my favorite to encounter. My AP 2D concentration deals with things that greatly frighten me. My attempted remake of The Scream/The Cry by Edvard Munch has me as the screaming character that has been left behind by a bus in the middle of nowhere. Munch's piece deals with the feelings of fear, anxiety, and isolation. If I were to be left by a bus in the mountains I would fear that no one would find me and I would be all by myself. It just would not be fun to be left behind. Although I might not include this piece as one of my concentration pieces, I will keep it in my portfolio. Other pieces that I have done for my concentration include me in the middle of giant, vicious-looking snakes, surrounded by monsters, and being attacked by a giant octopus.

My Dog Betty

I've had my dog Betty for almost a year now. She will be one-year-old this month of October (7 dog years). We found her abandoned behind a small shopping center last December and decided to keep her. To this day I am not certain what breed of dog she is, but everyone thinks she is a pitbull. For her whole life she has lived inside with me in my room. When she barely moved in, she slept on my bed each night since we had not bought her a bed yet. It was cold so we would keep each other warm. We bought her a bed and she took long to get accustomed with it, but she did so eventually. We took her to PetSmart training classes, but unluckily she graduated with no sense of etiquette. She cannot control herself, especially when people come to our house. She barks at everyone that she doesn't recognize and lately she has been sleeping on my bed and leaving a ton of dog hairs on it. She is driving me nuts! But I still love her enough to catch her sleeping to draw her in a split-complimentary color scheme on green, textured paper surrounded by her toys.

First Ever Series

This is my first series of messy tabletops. It is when I began to use colored pencil and colored paper. I enjoyed the effect from the vibrant colors and the rough texture of the paper. I started off with a still-life of the dinning room table, my desk, kids' toys, and then kitchen ingredients. In each piece there is an item that does not belong to the particular group of objects. In the first, the toothbrushes do not belong, followed by the shoes on my desk. Children can play with toys, but shouldn't play with the cleaning products in the background of the third piece. Finally, the little bottle of glue doesn't belong with the rest of the ingredients.

Concentration Statement

My AP 3D concentration consists of the abstraction of architectural models. I started off using just balsa wood and eventually added banana paper. Most of the models are made up of wooden strips combined with shapes. Towards the end, the models become more linear through the use of wooden sticks.

Artist's Statement

To me, experimenting is essential in developing my art.  An example would be experimenting with the color of the paper.  Like most artists, I began with the use of white paper, and through the years switched to colored paper. I greatly appreciated the effect of colored pencil on a different shade of paper. My colors became brighter and my mark was greatly visible.  This experimentation with colored paper has changed the mood and dynamics of my work.

I would say that my dreams influence a lot of my work. Many dreams that I have include being surrounded by huge, deadly snakes at the foot of my bed, my teeth falling off completely, and running with heavy legs making me appear to be in slow motion. I have recently combined these ideas with my colored paper technique to create colorful and comic-like pieces.

Most of the time, I like to put myself in the setting. I continuously use a frightened expression on my face, because I am an easily scared person.
